A job function is the highest level of job aggregation, grouping jobs that require similar training, skills, knowledge, and expertise. Job families are sub-groups within job functions that represent a defined area of work within a job function.


Academic Support

These jobs support faculty, staff, and students in the delivery of academic programs and contribute resources and expertise to support academic instruction, research, and service.

Academic Administrative & Faculty Support

These jobs provide academic support by coordinating, researching, recommending, and implementing overall initiatives for academic programs or assisting in the faculty appointment and promotion process and other faculty related topics.

Child Development

These jobs typically provide teaching and child development education for K-12 and preschool children in non-UA student supported programs.

Library & Museum Services

These jobs oversee library operations and archival collections and services including, but not limited to, collection development and sourcing, acquisition, cataloguing, collection, display, and archiving.

Academic Program Management

These jobs manage existing and ongoing academic programs, initiatives, and processes as well as process improvements.

Instructional Design

These jobs plan, organize, and develop training curricula, materials, and programs to meet specific academic and trainings needs, including course content support.

Advancement, Fundraising, & External Relations

These jobs create relationships and establish strong external partnerships focused on fundraising for the University.

Advancement Services

These jobs identify new donor prospects through prospect research, steward donors through donor relations, and process major gifts/donations, providing back office operational services and support.

Development

These jobs develop and maintain relationships with donors with a goal of securing gifts, engage in fundraising efforts and foster external relationships to optimize fundraising growth.

Community Outreach

These jobs develop and maintain a favorable relationship with the surrounding community. These jobs develop and coordinate programs focused on the community surrounding the University, promoting goodwill by disseminating information to the community and soliciting feedback from residents.

External Relations

These jobs provide direct service and support to clients, partners, and alumni of the University along with the community.

Athletics

These jobs administer athletic programs and operations and oversee coaching, strength and conditioning, student athlete care and progress, and facility and event management.

Athletic Communications

These jobs use a wide range of media to strengthen and sustain a positive brand image of the athletics department. These jobs plan communications and PR initiatives and develop and release content via appropriate forms.

Athletic Services

These jobs manage the operation of athletics programs, sports, or department functions and sports facilities management. This includes resource management, program coordination, athlete and coach support, and compliance with regulatory bodies.

Athletic Professionals

These jobs coordinate, manage, and support the University Athletics programs. These jobs oversee team management, athlete development and experience.

Engineering & Architecture

These jobs involve the application of science and mathematical engineering and architecture principles to develop solutions for campus infrastructure. Responsible for undertaking research, design, development, and implementation of activities that improve the structural design of the University.

Architecture

These jobs plan and design the blueprint of campus buildings and landscape. Assess environment, design concepts, and create fiscally responsible budgets for campus building activities.

Construction Project Management

These jobs oversee the logistics and management of construction projects. Review contracts, develop schedule, and maintain budget. Includes jobs that manage interior design projects.

Construction

These jobs build and renovate campus buildings and landscape and adhere to established budgets. Inspect, maintain, and repair the construction of new and existing buildings.

Engineering

These jobs develop structural specifications for campus buildings and landscape. Assess construction methods and materials, safety requirements, and ensure campus structures adhere to applicable regulations.

Facilities & Maintenance

These jobs are responsible for supporting and fulfilling facility- related responsibilities and is involved in the planning and maintenance of an organization’s facilities.

Building

These jobs maintain campus buildings through custodial and related services.

Food Services

These jobs provide food services for students, employees, and customers; prepare and serve food and beverages.

Grounds

These jobs maintain campus grounds and landscaping through groundskeeping and related services.

Campus Equipment Maintenance

These jobs maintain and repair campus equipment. Perform scheduled maintenance and service work to ensure equipment is functioning properly. Perform minor repairs or renovations to facilities.

General Maintenance Operations

These jobs oversee and support maintenance related programs, policies, and initiatives that do not fall into one of the other Facilities & Maintenance job families. Typically involves administrative support or management of facility projects. Includes positions responsible for moving, event set-up, and inventory, referred to as logistics at UA.

Parking & Transportation

These jobs transport people and materials and repair, maintain and inspect transportation fleet vehicles. Ensure safe, accessible, and sufficient parking and transportation.

Finance

These jobs provide diversified accounting and financial services that focus on measuring the financial performance of the University. This function also coordinates with auditing and oversees budgeting.

Accounting

These jobs maintain accounts and records in various general and/or cost accounting functions; collect and analyze financial data; and prepare reports and recommendations for internal and external reporting and decision making purposes. May complete work related to developing, implementing, and monitoring accounting systems, policies, and procedures. These jobs review, verify and approve transactions and journal entries and prepare balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and other accounting statements. Ensure internal controls are adequate and consistently applied.

Financial Systems

These jobs oversee the maintenance of accounting and finance systems to ensure the accurate recognition of financial transactions. These jobs focus on data integrity, managing system interfaces, completing account charts, maintaining access/controls, overseeing the financial data warehouse application, and creating report building mechanisms and interfaces with IT.

Financial Analysis

These jobs analyze profit-and-loss income statements and prepare findings reports to make recommendations to management. Conduct ad hoc financial and/or budget analysis for institutional, college, division, and/or departmental decision-making purposes. Generate forecasts and analyze trends to assist with financial planning. Compare the institution’s, college’s, division’s, and/or department’s actual performance to budget, targets, and other metrics.

Procurement

These jobs obtain materials, parts, components, systems, and equipment. May negotiate contracts and coordinate purchasing activities with applicable departments to maintain inventories at planned levels.

Healthcare

These jobs provide healthcare services that support the well-being of employees, students, and community members. Services focus on physical and mental healthcare, health education, wellness programs, and health promotion.

Healthcare Support

These jobs assist and support with health services and administration as well as provide non-clinical care.

Mental Health & Wellness

These jobs develop individual treatment plans and provide behavioral intervention, therapeutic activities, and restorative programs. Monitor progress and document activities or behavior.

Patient Care

These jobs assess, plan, implement and evaluate the clinical needs of a designated group of patients and/or provide clinical care within the scope of practice.

Intercollegiate Athletic Services

These jobs assess, plan, implement and evaluate the overall health needs of University student athletes. These jobs focus on athletic training, athletic performance, strength and conditioning, and wellbeing.

Nutrition

These jobs evaluate, develop, and coordinate nutritional services. Provide individual and group counseling and education.

Human Resources

These jobs oversee talent attraction, retention, and rewards throughout the employee lifecycle. This includes compensation, benefits, recruitment, staffing, employee communication, payroll, and employment development along with HR operations.

Benefits

These jobs plan, design, evaluate and administer employee benefit programs, including retirement, insurance, paid time off, wellness and other health and welfare plans.

Employee Relations

These jobs develop, plan, and implement employee relations policies and programs. May counsel employees and address equal employment opportunity and labor relations issues. Assists with performance management, workplace accommodations, and complaint investigations.

HR Business Partner

These jobs serve strategic partners to an assigned client, e.g., college, school, division, or a combination providing some talent acquisition, compensation, classification, and employee relations services. Includes both the professional level positions and support positions essential to HR Business Partner success.

Learning & Development

These jobs support the creation and implementation of training and learning programs for university employees.

Talent Acquisition

These jobs source, assess, and drive the selection of talent to support university needs. Develop recruitment strategies based on workforce needs. Recruit, screen, and interview applicants.

Compensation

These jobs implement staff compensation, including incentives and recognition. Participate in compensation surveys and assist with the development and maintenance of compensation philosophies and strategies. Conduct job evaluations and confirm a position’s salary range assignment and exemption status. Stay updated on recent legislation and trends impacting pay programs.

General HR

These jobs design, implement, and monitor one or more human resource program(s), policy(ies), or procedure(s) that do not fall into one of the other HR job functions.

HRIS

These jobs process the organization’s human resource information using computer systems and applications. Research, analyze, design, and maintain information systems to support HR administration and projects.

Payroll

These jobs develop, implement, administer, and maintain payroll services and programs for university staff, faculty, and student employees.

Information Technology

These jobs design, develop, manage, modify, test, and implement IT solutions through new and existing applications, architectures, networks, and infrastructures; and manage data and ensure its security.

Data Administration

These jobs design, develop, and implement database applications to accommodate a variety of user needs. Ensure effective and efficient operation of computer database. Ensure databases run properly and remain current, readily accessible, and timely. Formulate and design new data applications.

IT Application Development

These jobs support customers by assisting with complex technical solutions requiring changes to core functionality, code, and systems.

IT Security

These jobs protect computer system hardware, software, and information from damage. Analyze security systems and applications and recommend and develop security measures to protect information.

Network Administration

These jobs manage network operations and lead technical teams through the design, implementation, operation and technical management of enterprise-wide networks and network services.

Web Development

These jobs build, design, and program websites and applications. Troubleshoot performance issues and maintain user interface. Ensure website and applications meet University and government regulations.

General IT

These jobs design, implement, and monitor one or more IT program(s), policy(ies), or procedure(s) that do not fall into one of the other IT job functions.

IT Project Management

These jobs oversee the logistics and project management life cycle of technical projects. Define project goals, develop project schedule, and monitor project performance. Manage budget and resources.

IT Technical Support

These jobs support customers with technical systems issues. Determine solutions and help customers fix problems. Provide technical feedback changes.

System Administration

These jobs manage the operation of IT systems. Oversee hardware, software, facilities, and service components that support the development, testing, monitoring, and delivery of IT services.

These jobs make sure the institution complies with all applicable legal and regulatory obligations; protect the assets and interests of the University through risk mitigation measures; keep accurate records and document activities.

General Compliance & Risk Mitigation

These jobs are responsible for general compliance and ethics support. Monitor and audit risk-related activities within the organization to ensure adherence to compliance policies and procedures to mitigate risk. Establishes audit criteria focused on compliance with legislatively mandated compliance initiatives. Reports compliance audit results to management and makes recommendations for implementing controls where appropriate.

Legal

These jobs provide a full range of legal advice, counsel, or service to third parties in support of a University function. This job family excludes faculty in the School of Law and jobs associated with the Office of Counsel.

Marketing & Communications

These jobs promote the Institution with partners, alumni, prospective students and parents, employers, academic professionals, media, and other audiences through a variety of channels and support the Institution’s mission by crafting and executing marketing and communications programs.

Communications

These jobs plan, manage, and coordinate communications to promote the University internally and externally (e.g., through print/video/social media, events, and briefings). Write and edit internal and external communications.

Photography, Videography, Graphic Design, & Creative Services

These jobs create visual content and illustrations to promote the University. Design digital and traditional content, oversee graphic design initiatives, and sustain a positive image of the institution.

Public & Media Relations

These jobs coordinate media relations and prepare internal and external communications. Relay information concerning the organization to the press and the wider community to gain understanding and acceptance.

Video & Broadcast Media Production

These jobs write and produce content for broadcast and digital platforms. Coordinate production, edit and distribute content, and maintain media database and archives.

Marketing

These jobs coordinate marketing for the University, promote brand awareness and support the achievement of university, division, and/or revenue goals.

Print Media Production

These jobs write and produce content for print platforms. Coordinate production, edit and distribute content, and maintain database and archives.

Sales

These jobs are responsible for sales activities within the University. Pursue new business accounts and manage existing relationships.

Office/Administrative

These jobs provide administrative and secretarial support to maximize the efficiencies and ensure the correct functioning of facilities, offices and/or business services assigned to a unit, department, or the Institution overall.

Administrative Operations

These jobs plan, oversee, and perform clerical duties that contribute to the effective operation of the University, generally within a college, division, or department. May provide expertise by coordinating, researching, delivering, recommending, and implementing initiatives, policies, and programs.

Information and Records

These jobs manage University operational records and research, add, update, and validate data in corresponding database.

Administrative Support

These jobs provide secretarial support for various department or individuals, including senior executives. Coordinate meetings and travel arrangements, order supplies and equipment, prepare correspondence, monitor telephones, screen visitors, present materials, and file documents.

Public Safety & Security

These jobs are responsible for occupational safety, laboratory safety, hazardous materials control, hazardous waste management, emergency services and preparedness, public safety and campus security, fire safety, radiological safety, and other safety related programs and policies.

Campus Security

These jobs are responsible for workplace security and protection, including access control. Coordinate existing and develop new security policies and programs.

Environmental Health & Safety

These jobs identify and control the risks to employees and the work environment that arise from physical, chemical, biological and other workplace hazards. Establish and maintain safe and healthy working conditions and minimize the adverse impact of operations to the physical environment. Address regulatory compliance if needed.

Emergency Management

These jobs are responsible for managing emergency preparedness, responses, and situational management. These jobs manage threats to life and property on campus.

Police

These jobs administer and enforce university policies and local, state, and federal laws. Make arrests, patrol areas to safeguard life and property, react to emergency calls, maintain order, deter criminal activity, and control traffic.

Research & Economic Development

These jobs develop, facilitate, implement, evaluate, perform, administer, and oversee a wide variety of research, outreach and economic development programs or initiatives.

Outreach and Economic Development

These positions in colleges, university centers and institutes support research focused on outreach and economic development at the national, state, and local level.

Research Management

These jobs coordinate and oversee research projects. May be responsible for project budget, resources, and schedule.

Research Support

These jobs provide administrative and technical support to researchers by assisting with research projects and activities. Includes positions that perform experiments in support of research professionals and principle investigators.

Research Administration

These jobs are typically associated with the central research administration function. These jobs manage and provide oversight for the entire grant lifecycle, from initial grant pre- research through post-award. The positions provide policies and procedures to facilitate research proposals, research awards, and address research compliance requirements. Review grants and contracts and ensure compliance with applicable regulations. May support the technology transfer function and sub-award processes.

Research Professional

These jobs plan, manage, or carry out all phases of research programs and projects. Discover new knowledge, techniques materials, and concepts using distinguished levels of expertise, and pursue external funding to support research.

Student Services

These jobs are responsible for developing and implementing strategies, programs, networks, and systems to support student development and experience at the Institution.

Academic Advising

These jobs guide and support students in their academic and career endeavors. Understands academic requirements and procedures within the institution and works with students to empower and improve their experience. May have the authority to approve and review degree programs and credits and make exceptions when needed.

Career Services

These jobs coordinate, direct, and manage industry relations, networks, and career resources to serve career development needs of students and alumni. Responsible for advisement, event management, activities, and programs that support career development and the job search process. Coordinate programs and services for workshops and skill development.

General Student Services

These jobs oversee and direct student related programs, policies, and initiatives that do not fall into one of the other Student Affairs job functions. Typically involves management and direction within the Institution to support student success.

Registration and Registrar

These jobs provide oversight and administer student information system, which includes the central repository for academic courses and calendar, and all student registration activities. These jobs maintain records associated with student enrollment and academic progression outside of the admissions process, including degree completion and confirmation of graduation.

Admissions

These jobs deliver services around recruiting, coordinating, and admitting students into the University. Includes administration of scholarships. Involved in various specialized administrative/processing duties and related tasks.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

These jobs oversee financial aid application processes. This includes analyzing student data, implementing procedures to address regulatory compliance and accurate delivery of financial aid, and maintaining student billing information.

Housing & Residence Life

These jobs are responsible for the needs of on-campus housing facilities, residence life programming, and the experiences related to student life.

Student Recreation

This includes recreation and wellness jobs that promote wellness and recreation programs and policies for students.

University Operations

These jobs are responsible for providing a broad range of administrative support for job families spanning the organization. The job families in this group support day-to-day institutional administration and operations.

Auxiliary Operations

These jobs provide university operated student related support services such as bookstore, printing services, and other operations that are revenue generating. These jobs may also provide specialized services to campus customers.

Campus Mail & Delivery Services

These jobs pick up and deliver mail, boxes, packages, supplies, and reports to buildings and individuals.

Event Planning

These jobs plan and lead University events along with non- University events held on University property.

Property Development/Management

These jobs develop or manage property owned and leased by the University along with budgets and plans based on property needs. These jobs manage and oversee various day-to-day operations. Includes jobs that oversee commercial property development and real estate transactions. Includes jobs that inspect commercial properties, evaluate maintenance concerns, and review lease agreements.

Business Operations

These jobs measure the financial performance of the institution, provide financial and general business support to sustain business operations, and/or identify strategic business opportunities.

Data Analytics

These jobs gather and analyze high volumes of real-time and unstructured data using advanced statistics and algorithms to predict future trends and patterns, programming data systems and tools to automate analyses, provides insights, and create visual presentations.

Instructional Planning & Research

These jobs provide institutional planning and assessment activities and accreditation support, institutional research services and support, including data analytics and reporting.
