The Training Resource Center (TRC) is a learning center with DVDs, videos, audio tapes, training guides, and books. The TRC and the resource materials are available for UA faculty/staff and retired faculty/staff. Check out a DVD/video for your staff development program or schedule a "lunch and learn" session for your staff through HRD.

Facilities

Training and Development facilities are available by reservation for all University faculty and staff. For reservations, contact Bridget Busby at 348-9700 or e-mail at bbusby@fa.ua.edu.

  • Classroom:This space has seating for 32. The room includes an overhead projector and large screen with computer and video connections. This space is ideal for classroom instruction and webinars.
  • Computer Lab:This space contains 12 student computers and an instructor's computer with an overhead projector and large screen.
  • Conference and Resource Room:This space has seating for 6 and is an ideal small meeting or interview location.

Instructors

Abrams, Sandra - Manager of Benefits, The University of Alabama

Manager of Benefits with The University of Alabama's Department of Human Resources, Ms. Abrams joined the UA management team in 1996. A seasoned human resource professional, Ms. Abrams has directed all aspects of human resources programs in the medical field, industry settings, and education. Additionally, she has extensive experience managing employee relations programs.

Her educational background and professional credentials include a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Stillman College, Professional Human Resources Certification (PHR), membership in CUPA (College and University Personnel Association), SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management), and THRP (Tuscaloosa Human Resource Professionals).

An advocate of giving back to your employer and profession, Abrams' most recent service to the local and regional employment community includes serving as President of THRP in 2006, serving as Chairperson of the Annual Human Resource Management Conference in 2007, and service as a member of the UA System Tri-Campus Benefits Board. Speaking regularly to many groups and organizations, Ms. Abrams enjoys most the opportunity to speak to our UA students in their business classes and student organizations on the topic of employee benefits. Additionally, if there is a fun run or walk designed to raise awareness or money for a cause that benefits people in the community, Sandra Abrams can be found trailblazing a path.

 

Avant, Donna - EAP Specialist,  DCH Employee Assistance Program (205) 759-7890

Donna M. Avant, LCSW, completed her Masters of Social Work at the University of Alabama. She currently serves as the Client Services Coordinator of the Employee Assistance Program. Her professional credentials include Licensed Certified Social Worker in the State of Alabama, Certified Instructor (Skills for Empowered Workforce), and Certified Smoking Cessation Facilitator. Bolling, Tacy - Auxillary Services

Tacy has been part of The University of Alabama Team for 5 years.  Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mass Communication from the University of Montevallo.  She also serves as a Certified Myers Briggs Type Indicator Trainer. 

Davis, Shirley - Employee Relations Consultant, The University of Alabama

In 2003, Shirley Davis joined UA as Manager of Compliance Training with the Department of Human Resources. During her five years with The University of Alabama, sha assumed the role of Employee Relations Consultant and in Spring 2008 was asked to serve a new role in policy compliance and development with the Division of Financial Affairs.

Prior to arriving at UA, Davis gained experience in Higher Education as the EEO COmpliance and Research Administrator at Clemson University, and at Virginia Tech where she worked in Academic Advising and Development. This background coupled with a B.S. Degree in Economics, a Master's Degree in Education, numerous professional certifications, and research experience maker her an excellent resource person for faculty, staff and students at UA.

A trained facilitator in Sexual Harassment, ADA, Organization and Management Skills, Immigration Law, Performance Management, Progressive Discipline, HIPAA, and Retaliation, Davis brings a wealth of expertise to the classroom.         

         

Dorroh, Tina - Accounts Payable Manager, The University of Alabama

Tina graduated from the University of North Alabama in December of 1986 with a B.S. in Accounting.  She joined The University of Alabama in 1987, she has served as the Accounts Payable Manager since 1997.  Prior to that she served as an Accountant in Financial Accounting.  She completed the Management Certificate Program for Supervisors in May 2000 and the Management Project last year.   She has taught classes for Staff Training/H/R Development since 1990.  Tina also received the McKinley Award in April 1998. 


Faulkner, Teresa
- Human Resource Development Manger, The University of Alabama

Teresa H. Faulkner, Manager of Human Resource Development at The University of Alabama holds a B.S. Degree in Communication and a Master of Education Degree with a concentration in Counseling and Higher Education.  She's been with Human Resources for five years and prior to that spent ten years with the Division of Student Affairs at UA working closely with all aspects of student and staff development and training.  Teresa's experience also includes serving as adjunct professor in the College of Human Environmental Sciences teaching such courses as "Training in the Hospitality Industry."  She is a member of the American Society for Training and Development and the Tuscaloosa Human Resource Professionals.


Fowler, Janie

BS Degree in Safety Management from The University of Alabama.  Safety Coordinator  for The University of Alabama since 1987.


Garrett, Chip

Harris, Dr. Thomas
- Professor, Communication Studies, The University of Alabama

Dr. Tom Harris is Professor of Communication Studies at The University of Alabama's College of Communication and Information Sciences and has been working as an organizational consultant for more than 30 years with organizations ranging from IBM and Georgia Pacific to banks, hospitals and manufacturing firms.  He has written six books on organization and leadership, more than 60 articles and book chapters and is a regular presenter at regional, national and international meetings on business, management and communication.  Tom has spearheaded major change efforts in over 20 organizations using a variety of leadership and team development techniques.


Harrison, Peggy
- Assistant Director, Budget Office, The University of Alabama

Peggy Harrison, Assistant Director of Budgets, holds a B.S. in Accounting and a Master of Accountancy from the University of Alabama.  During her seven year employment at the University she has held the positions of Plant Accountant and Manager of Fiscal Affairs in Nursing.  Prior to coming to the University she was employed by a local accounting firm.  She is a C.P.A. and a member of the Alabama Society of CPA's.     


Hollyhand, Carol
- Associate Director, Office for Sponsored Programs, The University of Alabama

 

Hope, Cindy - Director of the Office for Sponsored Programs, within the division of the Office for Research, The University of Alabama. 

           Her responsibilities include pre & post-award administration (financial and non-financial), cost analysis

           and expenditure compliance.  Prior to coming to UA, she worked for the University of Alabama at Birmingham

           in the areas of Costing, Grant and Contract Accounting and Financial Accounting and Reporting.  Ms. Hope came to

           UAB from Coopers and Lybrand, now Pricewaterhouse Coopers, and is a licensed Certified Public Accountant.

Sandy Hopkins completed her Masters of Social Work at the University of Alabama. Hudson, Tammy
- Associate Director for Sponsored Programs Financial Services, Office for Sponsored

           Programs, at The University of Alabama.

           Tammy's responsibilities include post-award administration (all financial and reporting of grants).  Prior 

           to coming to UA, she worked for Health Partners, Inc. as a Financial Analyst in the area of financial

           reporting.  Ms. Hudson came to Health Partners, Inc. from Boone Newspapers, Inc as an Accountant

           responsible for all areas of financial reporting for two of the newspapers including all aspects of

           reporting from payroll, receivables, billing, trial balance, notes to the financnial to the actual financials.


Johnson, Gina
- Director, Auxiliary & Support Services, The University of Alabama

Gina is the Director of Auxiliary Services at The University of Alabama and teaches Personal Selling and Marketing Management in the College of Commerce and Business Administration.  She is a graduate of Auburn University with a degree in speech communication and Journalism.  She also received an MBA from The University of Alabama.  She is the former director of the MBA Program and the former Associate Director of Housing and Residential Life.  She currently directs six areas at UA including the Supply Store, Bama Dining, University Printing, Transportation Services, the Action Card and Land Management.

Gina is a community volunteer, sustaining member of the Junior League of Tuscaloosa, officer on the Board of Directors of RISE and serves on the Executive Council for the Carraway Methodist Medical Center's board of Pastoral Care and Counseling.  She is the wife of SouthTrust Mortgage Company Vice President, Jim Johnson.  They have one daughter, Houston, who enjoys ballet and acting.


Kelly, Patty
- Personnel Data Assistant Senior, The University of Alabama

            Patty leads the Personnel Action Form training for HR Development.  As part of the Input Team in the

            Payroll Department, she enters personnel information for all UA employees such as change of

            address, banking, work hirstory, verification of employment, and deals with contact field information

            concerning corrections and instructions for completing personnel action forms.

 

Kelly, Dr. Rebecca K. - Director of Health Promotion and Wellness, The University of Alabama

Dr. Kelly, Director of Health Promotion and Wellness for The University Of Alabama, joined UA in January 2007 with the charge of making the Capstone one of the healthiest places to work. Recently profile in USA Today as one of the nation's leading experts in helping companies become healthier and more productive, Kelly implemented a nationally recognized wellness program for America Cast Iron Pipe Company, her previous employer.

A leader in corporate health initiatives, she works to create work sultures of health, productivity and excellence. In addition to the health promotion and wellness related programs, initiatives and workshops provided to the UA community through Kelly's direction, she serves as an expert resource on topics geared toward increasing productivity in the workplace. Spring 2008 she presented Creating Thinking Managers, a workshop designed to engage managers campus-wide in critical and creative thinking processes.

Kelly holds a bachelor's degree in nutrition and food science, a master's degree in exercise physiology, and a doctorate in health education and promotion. Kelly has been involved in the development of more than 20 signature health programs, including a national recognized worksite diabetes education program, a worksite rehabilitation program, and the development of a wellness screening model used to predict health care costs and productivity.


Keyes, Dr. Lee
- Counseling Center Director, The University of Alabama

Dr. Keyes received a doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Texas A&M University in 1991 after completing his internship at Duke University.  He served as a Staff Psychologist at UA's Counseling Center beginning in 1991 and became its Director in 1998.  Areas of interest include psychotherapy with young adults, preventive and educative interventions, stress and coping skills, and crisis management.  Originally from North Carolina, Dr. Keyes is married and has two children.


L'Etang, Michelle
- Tax Manager, The University of Alabama

Tax Manager for the University of Alabama.  Certified Public Accountant (CPA).  Accounting Degree and Master of Tax Accounting Degree, both from the University of Alabama.  14 years of tax experience (4 with an international CPA firm and 10 with the University of Alabama).  Personal:  married (husband is also a CPA, with his own firm), 2 children.  Interests include gardening, reading, piano, church/community service. 


Martin, Dr. Jill Jenine

Dr. Jill Jenine Martin completed her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology at Mississippi State University. Dr. Martin's professional credentials include Licensed Psychologist, Nationally Certified School Psychologist, Nationally Certified Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor (Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida) and Qualified Substance Abuse Professional. Morton, Kurt

           Kurt Received a B.S. in economics from The University of Alabama in 1998 and an M.Ed. for Columbus State

           University in 2001.  Kurt leads training for Astra and Banner Course Term File.


Nelson, Dr. Mark
- Assistant Provost, Academic Affairs, The University of Alabama

Prior to assuming the role of Assistant Provost, Dr. Nelson served as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies in the College of Communication and Information Sciences at The University of Alabama.  Additionally, he served as the Director of Basic Courses and as an Associate Professor in the Communication Studies Department.  Committed to student enrichment, Dr. Nelson developed a three-tiered leadership program for students which includes the College Ambassadors, The Student Executive Council, and the Academic Honor Council.

 Dr. Nelson provides consulting services for numerous organizations and governmental agencies throughout the  Southeast, his training repertoire includes such topics as Public Speaking, Listening, Group Dynamics, Leadership Development and Team building.  His research interests include leadership, interpersonal communication competence, and diversity.  Recently, Dr. Nelson was recognized by his peers as the Knox Hagood outstanding Faculty Member and by the students of the University as The John Blackburn Outstanding University Advisor.  In Fall 2006, Dr. Nelson was recognized as Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year by the National Alumni Association.

Rowell, Jim

Jim Rowell, President of HRD Associates in Tuscaloosa, Alabama has had more than 20 years of experience in developing, conducting and managing training and organizational development.  He is also an Adjunct Professor of Management at The University of Alabama, and at one time was the Manager of Staff Training and Development for UA.  Jim left the University of Alabama to direct the training and development activities of Gulf States and from there began his own company.


Smith, Dr. Emily

Dr. Emily S. Smith completed her Ph.D. in School Psychology at the University of Alabama. Dr. Smith's professional credentials include National Certified School Psychologist, Alabama AA Certified School Psychologist and Licensed Professional Counselor. Spencer, Brett
M.L.I.S; MA- Reference and Instruction Librarian, The University of Alabama

Brett received his Bachelor's and Master's degree in History from the University of Southern Mississippi.  He also received an MLIS (Master's in Library and Information Science) from the University of Southern Mississippi.  Brett Spencer is a reference and instruction librarian at the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library. He teaches classes about searching skills for the internet and the Libraries' resources. He offers both group instruction sessions and one-on-one instruction sessions by request.   Please contact Brett at 348-1200 to schedule instruction for yourself or your department.

 

Stiell, Hiron - HR Assistant, The University of Alabama 

A new member of HRD's Speaker Resources Team, Ms. Stiell graduated from The University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English. After working in a corporate managerial setting, she returned to Tuscaloosa to pursue a Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration.

Stiell began her employment with the Department of Human Resources in January 2007 serving as a Human Resources Assistant. Accomplishments during her first year with UA include a career promotion, service as the United Way Campaign Coordinator, and serving as Facilitator of New Employee Benefits Orientation.


Stone, Deborah M.
- Advantage Training Solutions

Deborah, owner of Advantage Training Solutions, provides corporate training programs fro corporations, municipalities, and small businesses. In this capacity, Deborah has managed employees, designed computer training manuals, analyzed company needs, and provided consulting.

With a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science, she began her technology career as the Information Systems Manager for Farmers and Merchants Bank. Following that position, she became the Senior Computer Science Professor for Holmes Junior College in Ridgeland, Mississippi and later served as the Systems Analyst and Corporate Training Director for Microage.

In 1999, Deborah was invited to Washington D.C. where she was honored with the U.S. Small Business Administration Award of Excellence. Additional honors and affiliations include being a memebr of the West Alabama Chamber Technology Committee, Member of the Eutaw Chamber of Commerce, Instructor with the College of Continuing Studies, and President of the Greene Count Historical Society -- just ask her to tell you about restoring a Greek Revival home that became Oakmont Bed and Breakfast and her appearance on HGTV's "If Walls Could Talk".

Sumners, Marty - Environmental Services Technician, The University of Alabama 

           Marty attended Bevell State Community College for 2 years and received training in Ergonomics while

           working for The University of Alabama.  He has provided ergonomic evaluations and consultations for

           the past 15 years.  Marty also developed and maintains the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS)

           website as well as maintains the EHS computer based training lab and the local network within their

           office.  The EHS office provides environmental assessments for UA.  In order to provide this type of

           assessment, Marty is an accredited Lead Based Paint Inspector and AHERA Inspector.  He is also

           trained as a Hazardous Materials Technician, Respirator Fit Tester, Radiation Safety Officer, sampling

           and analysis of bulk airborne asbestos, and recently completed a course on Clean Air Compliance.

 

Tate, Adam - Accountant, The University of Alabama

Adam Tate, Accountant in the Budget Office at The University of Alabama, holds a B.S. Degree in Accounting.  While involved in all aspects of University Budgets his main priority is working with the Salary Budget System.  Prior to working at The University he worked in Internal Auditing and Consulting in the Financial Services industry.

Watkins, Katherine
- Benefits Specialist, The University of Alabama

Benefits Specialist with the Department of Human Resources, Ms. Watkins began her career with The University of Alabama in 2004. Prior to her arrival to campus, she served in Human Resources roles in corporate, government, and non-profit settings. Her vast experience has allowed her to develop expertise in every aspect of the Human Resources profession -- Employment, Payroll, Compensation, Benefits and Training. Additionally, she has extensice training in FML administration.

At UA, in addition to her regular duties, Watkins provides regularly scheduled presentations as part of the Benefits Enrollment process. She has additional training and development experience as a facilitator of topics ranging from Drug Free Workplace to Sexual Harassment, and serves as a co-presenter of Supervisory and Managerial training courses offered through HR Development.

Her education background and professional credentials include a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management from The University of Alabama, PHR (Professional Human Resource Certification), national membership in SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management), and local membership in THRP (Tuscaloosa Human Resource Professionals).
