programs designed to recognize employee contributions. Below
are listed the major programs designed to recognize individual
and group accomplishments and information about them is linked.

EMPLOYEE
RECOGNITION PROGRAMS
THE VERGIL
PARKS McKINLEY, SR. EMPLOYEE AWARD
John K. McKinley
and the late Helen H. McKinley of Darien, Connecticut, and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, established
an award to recognize enterprising employees, who by action
or idea, contribute to The University of Alabama's mission
of teaching, research and service. The award is in honor of Dr. Vergil Parks McKinley, a long-time professor at the University of Alabama.
After
receiving degrees at Columbia, Dr. McKinley came to The University of Alabama
in 1918 and retired in 1945 as head of the Trade and Industrial Development Department in the College of Education. His impeccable character was his hallmark
and endeared him to his students and peers.
GUIDELINES
- There will be a quarterly award of $1200.
- Any Supervisor may nominate any eligible employee who reports directly to him or her.
- Nominations shall be submitted
to the Employee Awards Selection Committee on the official
Employee Award Form.
- The
Committee
is comprised of Mr. John K. McKinley and several University representatives, or their designees, as stated in the Memorandum of Agreement.
- The Employee Awards Selection
Committee shall make their selection based on the
nominated employee having made a recent and especially enterprising
contribution to The University. All University of Alabama
employees are eligible for the award, but special consideration
will be given to non-faculty and non-student staff employees.

The Selection Committee will
consider any nomination for a period of one (1) year from
the date of submission. A new nomination will then need to
be submitted in order to have the employee considered.

THE
E. ROGER SAYERS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
The E.
Roger Sayers Distinguished Service Award was created in 1996
by members of the President's Cabinet and the National Alumni
Association to recognize faculty and exempt administrative
personnel who have performed in an exemplary manner to further
the mission of the University. Previous winners include E.
Roger Sayers (1996), David Womack (1997), Drury Caine &
B. Scott Bridges (1998), John A. Moore (1999), Dorothy J.
Martin (2000), E. Culpepper Clark (2001), Cathy Randall (2002),
J. Barry Mason (2003), Jan Pruitt Duvall (2004), Robert L. McCurley, Jr. (2005), Billy P. Helms (2006) and Coach Sarah Patterson (2007).
The Department
of Human Resources solicits nominations in the spring semester,
and the award is presented at the Spring State of the University
Address. Employees are encouraged to submit nominations of
individuals whom they believe deserve recognition for their
meritorious performance. Click

SAM
S. MAY COMMITMENT TO SERVICE AWARD
The Sam S. May Commitment to
Service Award honors a very special man who worked for the
University as a Custodian in the Chemistry Department from
1911 to 1941. Mr. May learned Chemistry from Instructors during
his lunch hour and later tutored students and helped in research
projects. Mr. May was awarded for his service to students
and faculty and is listed in the University of Alabama's Pictorial
History.
The Sam S. May Commitment to
Service Award recognizes departments, departmental units,
offices, teams, or centers that demonstrate exceptional customer
service, an on-going commitment to customers, innovation or
creativity in customer service, and continuous improvement
in customer relations.
- Those honored receive a departmental
award of $500.00 to be used within established guidelines,
team t-shirts, a team photo, and an invitation to the annual
recognition banquet.
- Any employee can nominate
an outstanding department/team. Up to five awards (one for
each division) may be given annually.
- The deadline for nominations
is July 31.
- Award recipients will be
recognized at the beginning of the fall term.

CRIMSON
SPIRIT AWARD
This award recognizes University
of Alabama employees who make a unique departmental contribution
by demonstrating the winning spirit that makes the University
of Alabama a great place to work!
- This award includes a small
monetary reward, a Crimson Spirit lapel pin, a special photograph
and an invitation to the annual recognition reception.
- One employee from each of
the five divisions may be recognized monthly. Up to sixty
employees may be recognized annually.
- Nominations may be submitted
by anyone and will be accepted on an on-going basis.
- Nominees must be current
University of Alabama non-faculty employees.
- Nominations will be kept
on file for one year.
- The Recognition Committee
will select the monthly recipients from the nomination information.

MINNIE C. MILES ENDOWED EXCELLENCE AWARD
The Dr.
Minnie C. Miles Endowed Excellence Award, established in 1995,
honors exempt, non-faculty administrative employees who have
performed in an exemplary manner, exceeding the expectations
set for their position and fostering the mission of the University.
Previous recipients include E. Roger Sayers (1996), Harry
J. Knopke (1997), J. Barry Mason (1998), Judy Arnold (1999),
Marilee Brown-Wells (2000), Hannelore Delbridge (2001), Bonnie
LaBresh (2002), Kathleen Cramer (2003), Donna Maples (2004), Deborah Hamilton (2005), John B. Maxwell, Jr. (2006), and Phillip B. Adcock (2007).
